Jose Mourinho’s agent, Jorge Mendes, has released a rare statement to confirm that Manchester United had no intention of sacking the 55-year-old.
The Portuguese’s position at the club is under serious threat after 14 Premier League games which have seen Man United slump to eighth position and accumulate a negative goal difference.
Reports have suggested that the club are in contact with Tottenham Hotspur manager, Mauricio Pochettino, over a potential appointment in the summer.
But Mendes, whose clients also include Cristiano Ronaldo and James Rodriguez, has made it clear in a very rare public statement that Mourinho was going nowhere.
“There have been more rumours of Jose Mourinho leaving Manchester United,” he said. “It’s totally untrue. Jose is very happy at the club and the club is very happy with him. He has a long-term contract with Manchester United and is fully committed to the club in building a solid winning project.”
Supporters should dispense with this idea that Mourinho is one or two bad results away from being sacked. United do not want that kind of mid-season chaos and, most importantly, do not want to spend that much money sacking him prematurely.
Just like with David Moyes and Louis van Gaal, United will only sack Mourinho when top four football next season is no longer possible, rendering it much cheaper to get rid of him.
At almost any other football club, Mourinho would have been sacked already. At a club which seems more like a business than anything else, he will only be dismissed when it is cheapest to do so.
