Manchester United have triggered a one-year extension clause on David de Gea‘s contract which keeps him at the club until 2020.
The club was always going to activate the clause in De Gea’s contract before 2019 to preclude him from having a chance to speak with other clubs from January onwards.
Jose Mourinho recently stated after Man United’s 1-0 win over Young Boys, during which De Gea made a match-defining save, that he knew the Spaniard wanted to stay.
And the first step of Mission Keep De Gea At All Costs has been completed, with the BBC‘s Simon Stone confirming that a one-year extension clause on the keeper’s contract had been activated by United.
De Gea option triggered. Contract to 2020. Just housekeeping. Key point is talks over new deal, which continue. Obvious that Sanchez salary is benchmark. And how does DDG see future? Coming up to eight years. Won 1 title. If he wanted to go finding a club wouldn’t be hard.

Reports last month stated that De Gea, with just one Premier League title in eight years, was reluctant to commit his long term future to Old Trafford amid doubts over the side’s capacity to compete for major silverware.
The media tone has significantly changed over the last couple of weeks. According to a series of outlets, De Gea does want to stay at United for two main reasons: his love for the supporters, who recognise and celebrate the 28-year-old’s brilliance, and the decision of his partner, Edurne, to relocate to Manchester.
However, any new deal will need to – at the very least – match the wage package granted to Alexis Sanchez in January, which is thought to be upwards of £300,000-a-week.
