Romelu Lukaku told Thierry Henry that he was targeting the former Arsenal striker’s total 175 Premier League goals.
The Belgian, at the age of 25, has amassed a total of 105 Premier League goals, becoming his country’s all-time leading goalscorer in the process.
His goal during the 2-1 win over Watford last month took him past Didier Drogba and made him the ninth most successful Premier League goalscorer from outside England.
Speaking in a recent interview, Lukaku noted how he joked – but not really joked – with Henry, who recently left Belgium’s coaching staff to manage Monaco, that he was coming for the Frenchman’s tally.
“When that happened, Drogba sent me four cups [for his four Premier League titles] on Snapchat!” he said.
“We speak every day and it’s really nice because he’s been part of the process. Now I’m talking to Thierry Henry saying: ‘I’m coming for you’ on 175! I’m laughing saying it to him but, deep down, inside he knows I’m dead serious!”
Lukaku scored his first senior goal in 2009 and went on to score 175 more for various clubs. Add his 45 Belgium goals and you have an overall total of 221. At the age of 25. With most of those goals coming at Everton.
There is a case to be made that Lukaku, despite his unquestionably impressive tally, has not even reached his full potential. He is a world class goalscorer but not, as of yet, a world class striker. Once that happens, Henry will have a right to be fearful.
