Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has revealed that he is not at all confident that goalkeeper David de Gea will sign a new contract at the club.
The Spaniard’s current deal expires at the end of the season and there has been reported interest from Italian champions Juventus and the dominant side in France, Paris Saint-Germain.
De Gea was expected to sign a new long-term deal at Man United in August and there was great confidence from the Reds that he would commit his future. That was due to Real Madrid bringing in Thibaut Courtois from Chelsea in the summer. Los Blancos had been the perennial suitors of De Gea. Simultaneously, the 27-year-old’s girlfriend, Edurne, has recently moved to Manchester.
Mourinho told reporters that he isn’t confident De Gea will sign a new contract now, though.
“I am not confident,” Mourinho said.
“I cannot find the word in English, but let’s see what happens.
“Only the club, David and his people can answer that. My comment is only that everyone knows how good he is, how important he is for United and, if the club want to be better than it is and not worse, obviously it would be very important to keep David.”
It would be a huge blow to United if De Gea was to leave. He’s by far and away United’s best and most important player. He’s consistently world-class in goal and would be utterly irreplaceable.
However, it wouldn’t be completely surprising if De Gea was to leave. United haven’t won one of the two major trophies they target for five years now. The last time they lifted the Premier League title was in 2013 in Sir Alex Ferguson’s last year in charge.
The last time they were European champions was more than a decade ago. De Gea is a goalkeeper worthy of all the trophies in the world, and he won’t get that at United. Perhaps it could be a wake-up call to the owners at Old Trafford.
Juventus are reportedly lurking and could patiently wait until De Gea’s contract runs out to sign the Spaniard.
