Rio Ferdinand believes Paul Pogba is acting as a mouthpiece for the entire Manchester United squad in the media.
The Frenchman made comments earlier this week that indicated a frustration at manager Jose Mourinho’s tactics at Old Trafford. Pogba insisted that Man United need to “attack, attack, attack” at home despite saying, “I am not the manager, I cannot say.”
It was seen as a challenge to Mourinho’s authority at the club, and certainly was a challenge to way that Mourinho sets his side up. United never take the game to teams and are far too reactive, waiting for opportunities to present themselves rather than seeking them out with a sustained spell of play with some kind of identity.
Pogba was voicing the concerns of many United fans, but Ferdinand believes he will also have been speaking for the majority of the United squad, too. The 25-year-old remains young but is one of the more senior, and definitely the most high-profile, players in the side.
“I don’t believe Pogba is on his own. I think there’s a group behind him,” Ferdinand told BT Sport ahead of United’s game against West Ham.
“I would lean towards that [Pogba acting as a mouthpiece for other players].
“If Paul Pogba is speaking out about anything, I don’t think he does it from a selfish point of view, he’s not that kind of boy. He’s doing it as a spokesperson for his team. Things like this shouldn’t get out.
“He is a man with character and personality. He wants to be the man who is talked about.”
It’s likely that a number of other United players have similar concerns to Pogba. While the midfielder insisted his words were not against Mourinho, what he was saying was telling about his attitude. United players and fans will only grow more frustrated with more defeats and shocking performances, as against West Ham on Saturday.
