Jose Mourinho is confident of tying down Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea to a long-term contract at the club.
That is despite reports over the last couple of weeks that the Spaniard is holding out for a much larger deal than currently being offered, so that his contract will match that of the highest earners of the club; Paul Pogba and Alexis Sanchez.
De Gea’s contract at Old Trafford runs out next summer, and the 27-year-old would become a free agent. Man United are prepared to make him the highest paid goalkeeper in the Premier League with a £200,000 a week deal.
Although there have been some worries over De Gea’s resistance to sign a deal of that value, United boss Mourinho put them to bed after Sunday’s 2-0 victory against Burnley.
“I don’t belong in the process of discussing deals with the players and negotiations with agents,” Mourinho said.
“I never did that, it’s something that I don’t even like to do.
“I would be a bad negotiator; I would give everything to the players. So I don’t belong to that.
“I just know that everything is in movement and hopefully sooner than later we’ll have good news.”
Ensuring that De Gea’s long-term future is at United is vital to any future success at the club. The former-Atletico Madrid goalkeeper has now been in Manchester for seven years, but came worryingly close to leaving in the 2015 summer transfer window.
With long-term links to Real Madrid, United fans were pleased to see Los Blancos sign Thibaut Courtois from Chelsea in summer, meaning it’s unlikely they’ll make a move for De Gea in the near future.
