Manchester United legend Paul Scholes has predicted more misery for the club’s fans as they head into a new Premier League season with little optimism.
The club’s supporters have been frustrated by the lack of signings completed so far with less than 24 hours left to the transfer window.
The summer window ends at 5pm on Thursday though players can still depart due to the rest of Europe’s window ending at the end of the month.
United have only made one major signing in Fred and it seems Scholes believes it won’t be enough to challenge their rivals for the title.
Fans have been the most pessimistic they have been ahead of campaign in recent times with Jose Mourinho tasked with a huge job to turn it all around.
According to Sky Sports, Paul said: “When you look at Manchester City, possibly Liverpool, I don’t think they [United] have the quality of those two teams at the minute.
“Liverpool have made some really good signings. United finished above them last season. I just don’t see United getting closer to City.
“City are a really good side, great manager, some great players, a way of playing that they all know about and Manchester United seem to be not too sure what’s going on.
“You don’t really know the team, you don’t really know the players, you don’t know how they’re going to perform from one week to the next.
“So I hope I’m wrong, but I don’t see them challenging for the league this year.”
Even before David Moyes’ era began there was optimism while Louis van Gaal was meant to bring an exciting style of play to the club.
In his second season in charge, the Dutchman still had the supporters on his side as he had steadied the ship to a degree.
Mourinho did a better job as he brought trophies to the club and steadied the ship once again so there was the same optimism in his second season.
Ahead of his third though, man fans believe there hasn’t been enough done to truly build on the previous seasons.
