Fred has made it clear that there remains a “great atmosphere” in the Manchester United dressing room despite defeat to Brighton and Hove Albion last weekend.
Jose Mourinho’s men performed awfully at Brighton, surrendering three goals in the first half and failing to offer a response in the second as they lost 3-2.
The fallout has been immense: agents, pundits, journalists and supporters have all contributed to create an atmosphere of gloom and chaos surrounding the club ahead of Monday’s clash with Tottenham Hotspur.
But Fred, speaking to ESPN Brasil, was quick to insist that the negativity had not percolated the Man United dressing room whatsoever.
“The press likes to talk, right? But the people in the dressing room… man, it’s a great atmosphere,” he said.
“From what I’ve seen, since I arrived, no one has any intrigue with anyone inside the club. Inside the locker room, inside on the pitch there. On the contrary, it’s one trying to help the other.
“And it’s normal man, we lose a game, people will hit us because it’s a great team, it’s a giant here in Europe. So it’s normal, they will speak.
“But Mourinho is a great manager, he is a guy who I’m very happy to work with, and this group here too, I’m very happy to be in the group, which is a very good group, a very closed group. So we are still at the beginning, we are trying to unite even more to take this on the pitch and seek our wins.”
Mourinho spoke to the media yesterday without really saying anything, sending the press into a frenzy about quite literally nothing. Such is the climate surrounding this club at the moment.
More words will not help anything. Players should have no interest in looking beyond their bubble to see the madness unfolding.
The only thing which will change perceptions of this squad and the tone of the media is beating Tottenham Hotspur on Monday. That has to be the focus.
