Manchester United supporters have reacted with disappointment and even fury at news of their club’s entering talks with Bayern Munich for Jerome Boateng three days before the transfer deadline.
Supporters, who haven’t seen a big signing since Fred all the way back in June, had expressed excitement at the prospect of Toby Alderweireld completing a late move to Old Trafford.
But the tone has changed: reports in Germany and the United Kingdom have exploded on Monday with the news that Man United, after all this time, have now entered talks to sign the injury-prone 29-year-old.
And supporters have not hidden their frustration at the prospect of signing a considerable downgrade to Alderweireld.
He’s no better than what we have and his best days have been and gone. Better keeping Tuanzebe than buying this overweight has been.

Bayern selling us another player that's completely done. This would be one of the bigger wastes of money. I'd rather we sign no one

Don't want him. Too slow for the Prem & not good enough.

Bayern are the masters at flogging players who they know are finished at the top level. After Hargreaves and Schweinsteiger, not sure I see the value in Utd going for £50m+ Boateng, 29, with a history of injury problems. Something about learning lessons…

Boateng would be an admission of defeat. He's effectively #mufc's fourth-choice and Bayern have been offering him around Europe for months. Would say it all about United's window if they take something from the European elite's scrapheap.

If we get Jerome Boateng and agree to pay him £250k a week then I will cry. German Chris Smalling.

Mourinho revealed over pre-season that he has presented Ed Woodward with a list of five defenders he wanted at Old Trafford. That obviously didn’t mean he wanted all five. The boss just wanted one from the list.
The top two, by all accounts, were Alderweireld and Harry Maguire. Perhaps Yerry Mina, linked heavily with the club last week, was third.
We really can’t say. One thing we do know, however, is that Boateng was certainly not a main target for Mourinho, or even a viable second choice.
That the club, three days until the transfer deadline, have only just started negotiations with Bayern shows they have resorted to a state of panic as they try to make a fourth signing.
