Manchester United kick off the 2018-19 Premier League season on Friday night as they host Leicester City at Old Trafford.
It may be a new season but there won’t be many new faces on show for Man United after the club failed to sign a centre-back before this evening’s summer transfer deadline.
New £52m midfielder Fred is expected to start for United, but other arrivals Lee Grant and Diogo Dalot won’t play a part as well as an array of key stars such as Jesse Lingard, Paul Pogba and Romelu Lukaku.
Mourinho only has a limited part of his squad available to choose from and he’s suggested that it may lead to new tactics being deployed against Leicester and onwards.
Speaking in his press conference earlier today, he insisted: “The target is the Leicester match and the tactics to be changed – in Championship Manager you can just press a button.
“In football, you need time to work and you need players on the pitch to work with which we didn’t have until now.
“I said that during pre-season – it looked like I was saying something absolutely out of order, it looked like I was saying something crazy – but I repeat, pre-season is difficult when you don’t have your players to work with.
“It’s as simple as that.”
United used a three-at-the-back system regularly during the pre-season tour of the United States and could use it against Claude Puel’s side rather than the usual 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1.
A change of tactics could just be temporary until the more prominent stars return but it’s certainly interesting to see how United line-up tomorrow.
