Former France manager Laurent Blanc has backed Paul Pogba to become a key star for both club and country in the next few years, despite currently experiencing a tricky spell in his career.
Pogba was considered as one of the best midfield players in the world during his four-year stint at Juventus, but has failed to live up to his reputation since returning to Manchester United in 2016.
The French midfielder arrived back in England for a then-world-record £89m but inconsistent performances throughout his first two seasons as a first team player at Old Trafford have sparked mass criticism from fans and pundits alike.
Ex-Man United player Blanc remains optimistic that Pogba will unlock his full potential in the future though, and has even tipped him to become a better player than legendary France midfielder Patrick Viera.
“I think [Pogba] still has room to improve. In my generation we have very physically impressive players, like Patrick Vieira, for example. Technically speaking Patrick is really good, but he is not as good as Pogba, especially in terms of attacking.”
“[Pogba] is well ahead of the other players in terms of physical levels. In the next few years, I think if Pogba does not suffer from injury problems, he will be one of the key players for France and also his club, we’re lucky enough to have Pogba.”
Pogba is expected to be a crucial part of Didier Deschamps’ France team in this summer’s World Cup in Russia which kicks off next week.
He was jeered by his own national fans in the 2-o friendly win against Italy last week for misplacing a number of passes, but his manager and team-mates quickly jumped to his defence.
The talent is clearly there with Pogba, and you would have thought it’ll be released sooner rather than later as he nears his peak.
