Manchester United has reportedly opted to prioritise their pursuit of Real Madrid forward Gareth Bale over attempting to bring team-mate Cristiano Ronaldo back to the club this summer.
Bale sparked suggestions that he was ready to leave the Santiago Bernabeu immediately after helping Real to a third-straight Champions League success with a stunning brace off the bench against Liverpool.
His regularity as a substitute under Zinedine Zidane is the exact reason why he’s open to a new challenge, with both Man United CEO Ed Woodward and manager Jose Mourinho long-term admirers of the Welshman.
According to the Manchester Evening News, United continue to explore the possibility of bringing the former Tottenham Hotspur star back to the Premier League for what would be a club-record transfer fee, with Real expected to want in excess of £100m.
Bale continues to be a priority, despite the chances of Ronaldo calling time on his long stay in Spain seemingly as high as ever due to CEO Woodward’s refusal to get drawn into another pointless saga with the five-time Ballon D’Or winner.
Ex-Real and England manager Fabio Capello last week claimed it was Ronaldo’s desire to finally return to Old Trafford and reunite with old boss Mourinho.
His mother has also admitted she wants the 33-year-old back playing in the famous red shirt in which he became one of the best footballers in the world and has since staked his claim as one of the best ever.
United require a right-winger, which means Bale fits the bill perfectly, but don’t need world-class competition for no. 9 Romelu Lukaku or certainly not another star on the left-wing.
A move for either men is purely speculation at this moment in time, but there’s certainly bound to be more updates as the summer transfer window rolls on.
