Manchester United star Jesse Lingard believes that England can go as far as reaching the World Cup final this summer in Russia.
The academy player has been selected by Gareth Southgate to represent his nation after a fine season that saw him establish himself as a regular first team player.
Lingard had been flirting with a spot in the starting XI for a few seasons but it was in Jose Mourinho’s second campaign that he managed to breakthrough.
The versatile attacker’s purple patch of form around half way through the Premier League season was enough to convince the Portuguese manager of his value.
Now travelling to his first World Cup having not been even close to going to the last one, England’s new number seven believes they can go as far as they like.
According to Sportbible, Jesse told Shortlist: “It’s a good group, winnable games. I think we can progress far, even to the final. We’ve got the confidence. And with the team that we’ve got, why not?”
Not too many people have put England down as favourites for the competition as there’s a generally young squad that’s featuring.
Ashley Young is the oldest player in the camp and so fans have toned down their expectations despite the excitement surrounding the talented youngsters.
Southgate may regret not going for more experienced players but only time will tell whether he and Lingard are right.
