Chelsea reignited their hopes of Champions League qualification with an Olivier Giroud header helping the Blues to a 1-0 win over high-flying Liverpool.
The game was cagey for the most part and Liverpool were only afforded a couple of openings in the first-half, forcing a couple of good saves from Thibaut Courtois in the Chelsea goal.
Olivier Giroud, who has been in scintillating form recently, then broke the deadlock in the sunshine at Stamford Bridge – nodding in Victor Moses’ floated cross to hand Chelsea the lead in what had become one of the biggest games of their season following Tottenham’s loss to West Brom on Saturday.
Eden Hazard came into his own in the second half, weaving his way past player after player and resisting the urge to give in to Liverpool’s aggressive tackling. The Belgian attacker drew the first real save from Loris Karius before Marcos Alonso’s fiercely-struck volley flew just centimetres wide of the German’s far post.
The victory puts Chelsea within just two points of Tottenham, with both teams having played a game less than Liverpool. Here are our player ratings from the win.
