Manchester United’s Ander Herrera has admitted he feels embarrassed to talk about Michael Carrick due to the latter’s status as a club icon.
The Englishman has long been a club fan favourite despite his nation consistently underrating him and it’s no surprise the Spaniard feels what he brings to the club.
Herrera has now played alongside Carrick for four years and has clearly gotten to know him fairly well ahead of his retirement in the summer.
The veteran midfielder will hang up his boots but his vital experience and knowledge of the club as well as it’s traditions and history will be kept on as a member of the coaching staff.
Michael will be sorely missed and the former Atletico Bilbao man is sad to see him go but also wishes him the best for the future.
According to the club’s official website, Ander said: “I have no words to describe him… I feel almost a little bit embarrassed to talk about him because he is simply a legend.
“He has done everything for the club and not only is he very calm on the pitch, he’s also very relaxed off it too. He knows how to act in every moment – in the good moments and bad moments.
“He’s always very humble and very balanced. I’m so happy to have played with him for four years and I wish him all the best.”
It’s a shame that Michael Carrick will end his career after an injury riddled season but at least he will do so as a Manchester United man.
What’s better is that he’ll still remain at the club and while it will take some time for him to distance himself from the players, there’s hopes he will be a top coach.
Some supporters felt that Carrick perhaps should’ve retired after Louis Van Gaal‘s departure, having won the FA Cup that season.
Others felt winning the Europa League and Carabao Cup should’ve been enough for him to retire after Jose Mourinho’s first season in charge.
Michael though will now get the opportunity to retire on his own terms and will even be given the opportunity to transition into his new role.
