Former Manchester United winger has expressed doubts over whether Paul Pogba will be at Old Trafford next season.
The Frenchman, following on from an excellent performance for France against Russia, impressed in midfield against Swansea but it was only his fifth start in United’s last 12 games.
He has endured a difficult patch of form of late under Jose Mourinho, who has failed to provide the Frenchman with a consistent designated role.
And Kanchelskis, reflecting on Pogba’s campaign at Old Trafford, noted that he was uncertain if the 25-year-old would even by at the club next term.
“I don’t know if Pogba will stay,” he said.
“He’s a good player, but is very inconsistent. Sometimes he plays well and other times he doesn’t play well at all. I don’t know if he will stay, it depends on which players Manchester United buy in the summer.
“They need to make changes ahead of next season. Pogba will need to play more next season, if he were playing under Sir Alex Ferguson he would definitely be playing more as they played more attacking football.”
Somebody described Pogba during the 2-0 win over Swansea City as “a Rolls Royce that never leaves second gear”, and I don’t actually think this is far off. Make no mistake: Pogba is one of the best footballers to experience live I’ve seen. He really can be liquid gold.
But why, you may be asking, does he never leave second gear? There are a number of factors. Some supporters argue he is lazy, lacking that vital ferocious edge of past midfield greats to wear the shirt, while others point to Mourinho’s deflating attacking approach and constant tinkering with his position.
So who is right? Well, unfortunately, the answer is nobody and both at the same time. Neither angle captures it perfectly yet both are probably somewhat true. Pogba needs to stand up more when things get sticky and Mourinho needs to let him off the leash a bit more.
It is very easy to paint situations in black and white. We should extra care to refrain from doing so when it comes to discussing a player – and a manager – nobody can ignore.
