Chelsea might have moved a step closer to appointing Maurizio Sarri today, as the Italian’s contract negotiations with Napoli have reportedly fallen through.
The 59-year-old has managed a litany of Italian clubs, being at his hometown Napoli since 2015.
His team are enjoying a superb season, and are four points behind league leaders Juventus with eight games remaining.
However, it seems all is not well in Naples.
Due to frustrations between the manager and the board, it seems Sarri may be on the way out. With the club’s unwillingness to spend large somes of money, the coach may take his talents elsewhere.
Enter, stage-right, Chelsea Football Club. As the team splutter to a Europa League finish, owner Roman Abramovich is reportedly looking to move on from Antonio Conte, who is approaching the end of his second season at Stamford Bridge.
Despite the former Italian national team manager’s Premier League title a year ago, it appears that won’t be enough to save his job.
With Sarri a name whispered around even before this contract standoff, those voices are sure to grow ever-louder.
