Man Utd youngster praises Mourinho for faith and support

Manchester United’s Joel Pereira has praised his manager Jose Mourinho for helping him develop at the club as he keeps one eye on the future.

The youngster plays as a goalkeeper and is the club’s third choice at the moment behind David de Gea and Sergio Romero.

Pereira has the difficulty of attempting to beat two international goalkeepers to the starting XI spot and not just one as most back up keepers have.

What’s worse is he has to try to usurp arguably the world’s best keeper in De Gea who has been in sensational form so far this season.

Even Romero has struggled for game time with Mourinho only featuring him in the FA Cup but the academy product has high hopes for the future.

According to the Express, Joel said to the club’s official website: “I’m very happy. As the number three, I have two top goalkeepers in front of me, and they help me a lot too.

“They have lots of experience and they can help me with that. Obviously, I have a manager who has helped me so much and has always been by my side. I’m learning a lot so I am happy where I am.

“Obviously it’s very nice to hear good stuff coming from the manager. Now is my time to show people that he’s right about me and everything he says is actually the truth.

“I’m just learning and getting some experience. We’ll see what happens next.”

Joel Pereira though at least has a manager in Jose who clearly trusts him, once calling him Portugal’s best goalkeeper in his generation.

It’s high praise from a manager who doesn’t tend to praise his players, at least publicly and the 21 year old can take that in his stride.

There is truth in Pereira’s words as it’s unlikely he’ll ever find two better experienced goalkeepers to learn from in the modern game.

Although he has his work cut out for him it’s not necessarily impossible and should Sergio ever get sick of the lack of game time and leave, then he only has David to compete with.

Joel also has the advantage of time being in his favour, keepers tend to have longer careers than other positions, meaning he will have more time to win over a starting XI spot for Manchester United.
