Former Manchester United man Paul Ince has claimed the club’s current squad have no real leaders as they did in the past.
Jose Mourinho’s men fell to an embarrassing defeat to Sevilla in the Champions League knockout stages at home at Old Trafford.
United were expected to coast into the quarter finals but their hesitance saw the Spanish side take the gamble that ultimately paid off.
Mourinho was heavily criticised by fans following the defeat as many couldn’t understand some of his tactical decisions and team selections.
On a night that was so crucial to the Red Devils’ season, Paul Pogba, Juan Mata and Anthony Martial were all missing from the starting XI and Ince believes the players’ mentality is what cost them.
According to Give Me Sport, Paul said to Paddy Power: “The entire team needs to take a long look at themselves after that performance, as well as the fans and the manager.
“They thought they could suddenly show up when Sevilla scored, but they didn’t. That complacency and lack of desire is the reason they aren’t in the quarter-finals.
“I can say for a fact that if me, Bryan Robson or Roy Keane were on that pitch and the game had started like that, it would be a different story.
“There’s not one leader in that entire United team. Not one player who can get a grip of the game, organise the players and make a difference.”
Manchester United’s lack of leadership has been debated about in the past, especially due to the recent quick turnover of players.
With David Moyes, Louis Van Gaal and Jose Mourinho all opting to build their squads in their image, it’s been a difficult and unstable time for the club.
United only have a handful of players who truly know what it means to represent the side as well as what it takes to lead.
Michael Carrick is the squad’s official captain but has suffered from a heart condition that has kept him out of the team for most of the season.
The captain’s armband has jumped around from player to player since with Paul Pogba, Chris Smalling and Antonio Valencia all taking turns.
The Ecuadorian is the official vice-captain and has been the leader for the most part but it’s fair to say he’s not the most traditional or vocal leader.
