Paul Scholes has claimed Manchester United must find a leader to take control on the pitch in tough situations.
With the January transfer window opening on Monday, manager Jose Mourinho could look to bring someone in to fill that role in the next month.
It’s been a common complaint of Man United fans in the last decade or so, that the Reds lack a leader on the pitch who can motivate the rest of the side and take a game by the scruff of the neck in the manner of Roy Keane or Bryan Robson, two players that Scholes referenced.
“For me, there is a real lack of leadership on the pitch,” Scholes said on Saturday night on BT Sport, for whom he’s a regular pundit now.
“There are young players out there who need help. They need coaching at times on the actual pitch.
“You think of the experience Matic has got at Chelsea and what he’s won there… they’re too nice to each other, they need to be having a go at each other.
“I knew as a young player that if I wasn’t doing what I was supposed to be doing I’d get a rollicking not just from the manager but from Roy Keane, Steve Bruce or Bryan Robson.”
United do have quite a young side at the moment, with even the more experienced, or ‘big name’ players under the age of 25 like Paul Pogba and Romelu Lukaku.
“The young players are not being helped by the more experienced players,” Scholes said.
It’s a point that will resonate with United fans. Paul Pogba has captained the side in the last few games in the absence of vice-captain Antonio Valencia and captain Michael Carrick.
The Frenchman is immensely talented, and showed that in United’s 2-0 win against Everton with two assists and a Man of the Match performance, but hasn’t shown yet that he’s got the ability to look like the leader on the pitch.
