Inter Milan boss Luciano Spaletti has insisted that his club will not make a permanent move for Manchester United attacking midfielder Henrikh Mkhitaryan.
The Italian giants have been heavily rumoured to be targeting Mkhitaryan for some weeks now. He’s fallen down the pecking order quickly at Old Trafford after starting the season well and cementing himself as one of the first names on the teamsheet.
Jesse Lingard has emphatically displaced him from the side and Mkhitaryan and Mourinho reportedly had a falling out in late November after a video analysis session.
Spaletti says Inter cannot afford the 28-year-old, though, unless Man United decide that they’ll accept a loan deal for the Armenian.
“I think people are ignoring it because you know all too well what the problems are,” Spaletti said at a news conference.
“It’s what I was saying at the start of the season: if we want to improve, we need to get players who are better than the ones we’ve already got.
“Who do you want us to go and get, who is better than what we’ve got? Tell me? Come on, give me some names, otherwise, we just go around [in circles]. It’s up to you…
“Mkhitaryan, [Javier] Pastore and then… you see? You need €30-40 million to buy them. We don’t have it. It’s no use beating about the bush – I’ve been told that we can’t spend €40m, so there’s no point even talking about it.”
“Maybe you could have an exchange of players on loan, but then you would need, for example, Manchester United to want one of our players, but you’ve got to have the same intentions.
“Everybody has to align with this FFP and nearly everybody needs to bring in more money.”
Inter almost struggled with UEFA’s Financial Fair Play scheme last year, and were close to selling Ivan Perisic to United because of it. However, some clever transfers out of the club allowed them to keep one of their starmen who’s performed exceptionally this season.
Spaletti’s side are third in Serie A, chasing leaders Napoli and Juventus. They’ve been brilliant, but need just a little extra quality to win the Scudetto. Mkhitaryan will not be that player, it seems.
