David de Gea has refused to confirm whether he is no negotiations for a new contract at Manchester United.
The Spanish goalkeeper did outline ow ‘special’ it is playing for the club, though, going some way to alleviate fears that he could finally be tempted away from Old Trafford by the allure of Real Madrid.
De Gea is now in his seventh season at the club despite having appeared to be close to signing for Los Blancos on a number of occasions. That was particularly true in 2015 when a ‘fax machine error’ caused a £29m deal to fall through.
Comments from Man United manager Jose Mourinho in the last fortnight have indicated that De Gea will be offered a new deal at the club in an attempt to secure his long-term future. Reports this week suggested that preliminary talks have begun over a new deal between De Gea’s agent, Jorge Mendes, and United representatives.
“Just being part of this club is special in itself,” De Gea made clear to Sky Sports.
“Being a player and a part of this club is special, so when you get to wear the shirt, you go to away games, that’s something you are always proud of and is very special.
“Being part of such a great club like Manchester United fills you with emotion and you gradually realise how much the club means to the fans and the people who work here.
“They really live for the game, so that does become part of you and you can only appreciate that having spent time here.”
De Gea seems to have summed up exactly why players fall in love with United. It’s a special club, filled with history and tradition, past successes and present glories, a fanbase bigger than any other in the world.
It’s likely that he’ll stay at Old Trafford now. There was a feeling around the club after De Gea’s move to Real Madrid fell through in 2015 that he was frustrated with their actions which indicated they wanted him less than he thought. They had three months in the summer transfer window to complete a deal, and failed to do so.
Weeks later he signed a new four-year contract, which will run out at the end of the 2018/19 season, though there is an option for the club to trigger a one-year contract extension.
Hopefully he pens a new contract within the next few weeks. If Alexis Sanchez joins United, it could be a fantastic January for the club with Jose Mourinho also thought to be close to a new contract at the club.
