Manchester United are reportedly no longer interested in chasing long-term target Antoine Griezmann who is set to leave Atletico Madrid in the coming months.
The La Liga side’s manager Diego Simeone recently confirmed that Griezmann would be allowed to leave the club if he wishes.
But fellow Spanish club FC Barcelona, currently favourites for the title, showing their interest in Griezmann, Man United have decided that they’ll no longer pursue the French international either this January or in the summer.
The 26-year-old came close to moving to Manchester last summer, but after FIFA upheld Atleti’s transfer ban, Griezmann signed a new deal at the club out of loyalty.
Atleti can buy players once again in January, meaning Griezmann’s desperation to stay at the club will be lessened. His form in recent months has been far from what it was last season, too, and he’s frustrated a significant portion of Atleti’s fans who haven’t forgotten his antics in the summer.
Spanish outlet Marca suggest that United boss Jose Mourinho doesn’t want to be drawn into a bidding war over Griezmann given Barcelona’s recent interest.
They also claim that Barcelona remain interested in Liverpool’s attacking midfielder Philippe Coutinho, but can only afford one of the Brazilian and Griezmann, meaning a decision must be made.
That could leave Griezmann in a difficult situation if United have indeed pulled out of the race to sign the player, if Barcelona eventually decide for the younger Coutinho to strengthen their forward line.
Griezmann has also spoken in the past about his desire to play alongside Neymar and French national teammate Kylian Mbappe at Paris Saint-Germain.
