Marcos Rojo opens up on being a Manchester United player during Christmas period

Marcos Rojo has revealed he’s still yet to reach 100% match fitness after returning from a long-term ligament injury recently.

The Argentinian began making his comeback in late November in Manchester United’s 1-0 defeat to FC Basel in the UEFA Champions League, and has played six times since, including playing a full 90 minutes on three occasions.

Rojo hasn’t looked quite at his best, and has been subbed off at half-time twice by Jose Mourinho.

“I am really happy to be back playing again regularly,” Rojo admitted to United Review in the Boxing Day edition.

“It was a long time out so I’m extra happy to be back. All you want to do is to be working hard to so you can be in the squad, in the team to help your team-mates to compete

“It’s really tough when you are out for a long time, so it’s great to be back.

“When you have been out for a long time it’s difficult to be competing 100 percent at this level because it’s such a demanding level and a demanding style of football and league, but with each game I am noticing that physically I’m getting better.”

Rojo has been in action all throughout the festive period so far, and with Eric Bailly injured for a few months yet and Chris Smalling picking up a knock against Burnley in a 2-2 draw, he’ll continue to be important in games against Southampton on December 30th and Everton on January 1st.

He admitted it’s sometimes difficult as a player at Christmas, saying “it’s a bit tough when you know you are going to be out at work when you want to be spending time with your family at home enjoying Christmas, but there is something extra special about playing matches at this time.”

Rojo claims the atmosphere at Old Trafford is different during the festive period, there’s a different feeling around the place.

“As soon as you get on the field there is an extra buzz about the place and something extra in the atmosphere,” he said.

“You can tell that the fans are living the whole experience in a different way than just a middle of the season game.

“The atmosphere is great during the fixtures over the Christmas period and that’s what we all love.”

Although United have suffered from a tough schedule, with very short periods of rest between games in comparison to other sides, Rojo did concede that playing at home against Southampton and then away to Everton, one of the closest teams in the league, would benefit the Reds.

“It helps tremendously,” Rojo continued. “Above all for our recovery periods because travelling really tires you out, so I think the fact that we have got two at home and one pretty close by over that period means we can get some rest and hopefully go into those games feeling as fresh as possible.”
