Luke Shaw remains one of the world’s best left-backs after making his first Manchester United starting 219 days on Tuesday night, claims Steen Gerrard.
The Liverpool legend and former England captain was effusive with praise for Shaw, who was named Man United’s Man of the Match after a powerful attacking performance down the left flank.
Shaw looked like he had a point to prove, and that he did, after months of public criticism from manager Jose Mourinho.
Gerrard believed that criticism has been Mourinho’s method of pulling Shaw’s very best out of him during a spell of poor form.
“I think he’s been strong at times but I think he’s been doing it for a reason,” Gerrard told BT Sport.
“I think that’s to try and get the best out of Shaw. He’s obviously not happy with certain parts of his game or his fitness or maybe his body shape.
“Mourinho goes about it in a certain way, it’s in a strong way but I don’t think it’s personal. I think it’s just to try and get the best out of the player.”
Shaw will be hoping his chance against CSKA Moscow in the UEFA Champions League is the first of many, needing to impress for Man United if he’s to earn a place in England’s FIFA 2018 World Cup squad for next summer.
“I think all of us as England fans need to see him back playing on a regular basis,” Gerrard said, “because when he’s on the top of his game he’s quality and one of the best left-backs in the world.”
