Jose Mourinho has hailed the attacking performance of Luke Shaw as the Englishman started his first game for Manchester United in 219 days.
22-year-old Shaw has had a tough season and a half under Jose Mourinho at the club, constantly criticised publicly and harranged for a perceived lack of fitness and poor attitude.
He was Man of the Match in Man United’s 2-1 win against CSKA Moscow on Tuesday night, though, playing the full 90 minutes and impressing greatly.
Shaw looked as if he had a point to prove, and that he did. Mourinho was impressed.
“Luke Shaw offensively was very good and made a great contribution for the team,” Mourinho told BT Sport.
“Shaw had waited for a long time, it is not easy to give an opportunity to a player in matches when we need results.
“I wanted to make changes, but Luke managed 90 minutes and I told him it is an opportunity to increase his levels.”
He was fantastic on the counter-attack, made some well-timed and strong challenges in defence, and was a huge presence on the left flank, always presenting an option for Paul Pogba and Ander Herrera as United’s midfield pushed forward against CSKA.
Ashley Young is in fantastic form at left-back and won’t be displaced by Shaw for Sunday’s huge clash against Manchester City. However, Shaw is back in contention with this performance, there is no doubt about that, and with nine games in December, chances should continue coming for the Englishman.
