Manchester United have been given a ‘ray of hope’ by West Ham United’s 2-1 defeat at Manchester City.
The Reds host their local and title rivals on Sunday at Old Trafford, going into the game off the back of four consecutive league victories. Pep Guardiola’s Man City, though, have won their last 13 Premier League fixtures.
Late goals, fantastic football and results is what the Blues are producing. United have been less consistent, but were ruthless and clinical away to Arsenal at the Emirates on Saturday, winning 3-1 thanks to a Jesse Lingard double and a David de Gea masterclass.
United great Neville believes West Ham’s efforts against City show United that they can be beaten.
“They [United] might, for the first time this season, have just seen a little ray of hope, that there will be better teams than Huddersfield, Southampton and West Ham, yet all came close,” Neville said.
“All three played a certain way and got joy with certain things – counter-attack has been a problem for City this week, set-pieces and corners have been a problem this week, deep and compact defences have also been a problem this week in terms of breaking them down.
“You would argue, given what happened at Arsenal on Saturday, that United do have that counter-attack ability with Anthony Martial, Marcus Rashford, Romelu Lukaku and Jesse Lingard, and that they do have the ability to score from set-pieces, and they are a better defensive unit than Southampton or West Ham.
“United will be confident going into the game because of what has happened this weekend for City, even though it has been a good week for City too, as they’ve scored three late winners and have taken maximum points.”
United go into Sunday’s vital game having shown their counter-attacking brilliance. City go into it having shown their incredible attack’s ability to pull off victories despite not dominating games, but also having shown their weakness against counter-attacking sides. It will be an intriguing and tense game.
