Manchester United’s Jose Mourinho has admitted that his team can’t take it easy vs Championship side Bristol City in the EFL Cup quarter-finals.
The Red Devils have been drawn as the away team and will need to be fully focused if they wish to retain the trophy they won against Southampton last year.
Although Mourinho previously stated that the nation may be better off without the competition entirely, he’s hardly ever not taken the trophy seriously.
The Portuguese manager has won it during his time at both United and Chelsea and will definitely be keen to add to his collection.
However, he’s also pointed out that although Bristol City are not in the same division as his side are, it doesn’t mean he can afford to show up with a weakened team or else he’ll be punished.
According to the Mirror Football, Jose said: “It’s also a fact that any match you play in this country, if you don’t go strong, you lose.
“We go to Bristol in the (EFL Cup) quarter-final and if you don’t go with a strong team, you lose. That’s as simple as that.
“In other other countries, between the top teams and the others, there is huge difference and not just in terms of talent and potential but also in terms of mentality.
“Here, the smaller teams want to win, want to compete, want to have the courage to try and get a result.”
United’s squad depth has been hailed countless times during the season and despite Mourinho’s comments, he’s likely to field a rotated side during the fixture.
The manager’s comments are probably just said to keep his squad focussed as the intensity of cup competitions heats up.
His players can no longer afford to cruise through games anymore and will need to fight fire with fire if they are to have any chance of retaining the trophy.
Bristol City will be looking to create even more history by beating Manchester United on home turf in what will surely be a memorable day.
Beating a Championship time should be a breeze for Jose’s men but they will have to be mentally prepared in order to do so and the Portuguese boss is doing everything he can to try to ensure they are ready.
