Chelsea head coach Antonio Conte has played down speculation that has linked him with a return to the vacant managerial role at the Italian national team, according to ESPN’s Chelsea correspondent Liam Twomey.
The Chelsea boss has been tipped to be the next man to take over at Italy and to get them back to winning ways after their shock World Cup play-off defeat to Sweden.
However, Conte played down the rumours and revealed he wants the best for his country.
Now it’s very difficult because this moment is not simple. This is not a great moment for my country to miss the World Cup, it means it is a disaster for us. There are a lot of rumours, but I think for the federation it’s right to take time to find the best solution.
The Italian will be solely focused on the job at hand at Stamford Bridge for the remainder of the season as he looks to mount a challenge in all competitions, including the UEFA Champions League.
The defending Premier League champions have made a stuttering start to the new campaign but will play with a renewed belief after defeating fellow title-rivals Manchester United before the international break.
Conte previously successfully managed the Italian national squad and is not thinking about that at the moment.
