Anthony Martial has explained why his relationship with Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho was slightly strained last season.
The Portuguese manager arrived at Man United in July 2016, signing for the Reds having watched Martial score 17 times in his debut season for the club.
But his confidence dropped with his performances and Martial fell out of favour with Mourinho quickly.
The Frenchman has explained why he and Mourinho didn’t understand each other at first, but now do.
“I’m someone who does not like talking, I like to stay in my little bubble,” Martial told Telefoot.
“It was hard with me [last season at United]. I think [Mourinho and I] did not understand each other too much. But we’ve got to know each other, we talk a lot more and now it’s better.”
Showing his honesty and ability to self-criticise, Martial continued: “I was not focused enough [last season].”
That seemed to be the case, with Mourinho usually criticising Martial’s attitude rather than his ability or potential, which is clear for all to see. This season, Martial is back on form, scoring frequently off the substitutes bench to now become a regular starter.
He played from the start in all three of United’s recent games, all coming within the space of eight days. Martial seems to be implying that he and Mourinho now understand each other, potentially the cause of his better performances.
