9 final third passes, 3 recoveries: United's "Mr Reliable" repaid manager's faith again

Manchester United won by a single goal against Aston Villa to solidify their position in the top four of the Premier League and the Champions League qualification places.

United’s goal was scored by Bruno Fernandes.

Marcus Rashford fired a shot that Emiliano Martinez failed to catch. The Argentine was only able to parry it into the path of a speeding Bruno Fernandes who put the ball into the back of the net.

Fernandes’s goal against Unai Emery’s men was the Portuguese midfielder’s ninth of the season for United in all competitions.

Today, Fernandes predominantly played on the right of attack with Antony relegated to a place on the bench.

Marcel Sabitzer played in the playmaker role in a midfield trio also consisting of Casemiro and Christian Eriksen.

Fernandes had 52 touches of the ball to his name. He delivered nine passes into the final third, in a show of attacking prowess from the 28-year-old.

Fernandes won three of his challenges on the ground. He made a similar number of ball recoveries.

The United captain won two out of the three tackles he attempted. Fernandes also successfully pinged two long balls to his teammates.

He made one key pass and created one big chance.

The goal was the crowning moment of his sensational performance against Villa.

Once again, United fans were treated to a show of just how important and crucial Fernandes is to Erik ten Hag and the team.

In terms of availability and versatility, the Portugal international is second to none in the United squad. That he excels no matter where deployed is a massive boost for Ten Hag.

Ten Hag cannot stop praising world-class United star after sensational display

Erik ten Hag lauded Casemiro’s performance in Manchester United’s 1-0 win over Aston Villa.

The Brazilian looked back to his original best, dominating the midfield from minute one.

Since his red-card suspension, Casemiro looked off the boil, with many fans perplexed.

The five-time Champions League winner seems to have been targetted by the referees for every small tackle.

Some believe that it could have gotten into his head.

Today he showed his quality against a tough Villa side that has been amazing under Unai Emery.

Erik ten Hag praised Casemiro in his post-match interview with the BBC:

“Today this was the Casemiro we have seen all season.”

“His leadership is so important for us. Others go with him, he is an example.”

The United boss gave a special mention to Victor Lindelof, who was brilliant.

“He’s playing fantastic. Really good games in and out of possession. Today totally defending in control but then building up as well, good positioning, good decisions so we are happy with that.”
Ten Hag will be happy with his team’s resilience to keep a clean sheet against Villa.
United are now in a great position to secure Champions League qualification.
The next game against Brighton & Hove Albion will be a stern test for United.

The Iceman cometh: United man’s sizzling form shows why he’s won Ten Hag’s trust

Manchester United rode their luck at times especially in the second-half but ultimately emerged 1-0 victors against high-flying Aston Villa on Sunday.

The winning goal came in the first-half and was scored by talisman Bruno Fernandes after Emiliano Martinez failed to gather a tame shot from Marcus Rashford.

The result was massive as it allowed United to open up a nine-point lead in the race for Champions League over fifth-placed Tottenham and Villa and also have a game in hand over third-placed Newcastle who are only two points ahead.

United held on for dear life in second half

Villa played a high line throughout the contest and the Red Devils were caught off-side plenty of times before the breakthrough came after a header from Casemiro from United’s half caught out Unai Emery’s side.

United desperately lacked that clinical edge up front and fans must have been wondering what a Harry Kane or Victor Osimhen could have done against a team playing such a high line.

The visitors gave it a good go in the second-half with United not playing too well yet again and it took a mammoth effort from the defence to hold on in the end.

Victor Lindelof and Luke Shaw were impeccable throughout the contest, with the England man even confidently playing in midfield at times, almost akin to the role John Stones plays for Manchester City.

But special praise must be meted out to the Swede. He had become a figure of ridicule as part of the comic centre-back partnership involving him and Harry Maguire.

Many United fans consider their pairing as the nadir in the history of the club but the former Benfica man has proved that he can handle his own when not under pressure.

Lindelof has been a rock at the back in recent games

His headed clearance off the line, a crucial header at the backpost and a great sliding block were particular highlights as United held on for dear life.

The Sweden international can pass well from the back and is always calm and composed and it is testament to his abilities that the United manager has played him both on the left and right of defence.

Considering Raphael Varane‘s injury concerns, Lindelof can easily take over without too much of a drop in quality and he deserves an extended stay at the club beyond the current season.

He has shown why he is called the Iceman with his calm match-winning penalty against Brighton in the FA Cup semifinal and his composed displays in the last few games.

If United are to sell a centre-back to raise capital, club captain Maguire’s time might be up. Lindelof has shown fans and pundits that he is worthy of more respect.

Bruno Fernandes makes the headlines, but this was United's real hero vs Villa

Manchester United beat Aston Villa 1-0 in the Premier League at Old Trafford this afternoon. Here are our player ratings for the game.

(A score of 6 is around average)

David de Gea 6.5 – A virtual spectator in the first half, cleared his lines well in the second.

Diogo Dalot 7 – Defended well, including what would have been a vital goal-line clearance in the first half.

Victor Lindelof 8 – Who needs Varane? Another top-class performance from the Ice Man. Brilliant goal-saving header in the 80th minute.

Luke Shaw 7.5 – Who needs Licha? Another top-class performance from Shaw.

Tyrell Malacia 7 – Lots of eyebrows raised at his inclusion in the starting line-up, but he was awesome until giving away the last-minute free kick. Timed his tackles like Wan-Bissaka but bombed forward like Dalot.

Casemiro 8.5 – Back to his best. Commanded the midfield. Some of his passing is as good as any of the world’s best. Still making a few dodgy tackles that could get punished harder by other refs, but he’s never going to take prisoners. Our man of the match.

Christian Eriksen 8 – Wonderful passing display and also got into some good attacking positions.

Bruno Fernandes 8.5 – Played quarter back and wide receiver in this majestic performance, capping it with a goal.

Marcel Sabitzer 7 – Did pretty well without anything really going his way. Looked stronger as the match went on. Unsure why he was subbed.

Jadon Sancho 7.5 – Caused a few problems and was positive and aggressive. Getting there.

Marcus Rashford 7 – A real handfull playing off the shoulder of the last man. Got an assist, too.

Substitutes:

Fred 5 – Brought the level down. Fouling and running around like a yorkshire terrier chasing a frisbee.

Antony 6 – Showed a couple of glimpses but didn’t get enough ball.

Harry Maguire 6 – Didn’t make much impact.

AnthonY Martial 6 – Didnn’t make much impact.

United’s rumoured next director of football set to sign for Chelsea - report

Chelsea are set to hire Monaco transfer guru Paul Mitchell, with the Blues set to exercise a massive personnel clearout this summer.

Mitchell has been linked to United on multiple occasions. Last month, The Peoples Person covered a report which relayed that Mitchell is a target for Sir Jim Ratcliffe in the event that the billionaire succeeds in his efforts to buy United.

Yesterday, news broke that Sir Jim’s third and final proposal to buy the Red Devils values the club much higher than Sheikh Jassim Bin Hamad Al Thani’s bid.

A decision on who will be the next owner of United is expected within the next seven to 10 days.

With Liverpool also waiting on the wings, it was detailed that Sir Jim is keen to pounce and get Mitchell to help shape the club in his image as he ushers in a new era at Old Trafford.

Former United interim boss Ralf Rangnick was keen for Mitchell to join United’s backroom apparatus. Rangnick never got his wish.

According to The Sun, Chelsea are closing in on the Monaco man.

The Sun reports, “Chelsea plan to hire transfer guru Paul Mitchell to help clear the decks.”

“He is set to join in a senior post after working for Monaco and has vast previous experience with RB Leipzig, Tottenham and Southampton.”

“And while his friendship with incoming boss Mauricio Pochettino is a major attraction, he is also an ideal man to shift the unwanted Blues.”

The Sun adds, “Mitchell has contacts in France and Germany, which could help to find new homes for many of the flops surplus to requirements.”

The former Wigan Athletic player is credited with unearthing gems like Dele Alli, Toby Alderweireld, Heung-Min Son, Kieran Trippier, Sadio Mane, Ibrahima Konate, Konrad Laimer, Amadou Haidara and Christopher Nkunku, just to mention a few.

Title chasers plot lucrative deal to keep Ten Hag’s target for another season - report

Italian giants Napoli could offer their prolific striker Victor Osimhen “heavier bonuses” in an attempt to keep the Nigerian superstar at the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium for an extra year.

Osimhen is the subject of heavy interest from Manchester United, who are on the hunt for a world-class goalscorer.

Osimhen and Harry Kane are the two names at the top of United’s transfer agenda as the summer approaches.

Gazzetta dello Sport reports that while clubs both in England and abroad prepare to face off against each other for Osimhen’s services, the player remaining in Italy with Gli Azzurri should not be discounted.

As per the Italian publication, Osimhen’s heart lies in Naples and if a decision over his immediate future was to be made based on emotions and sentiment, he would remain at his current club forever.

The 24-year-old is a symbolic figure in Naples and has hit admiration levels last seen when Diego Maradona was at the club.

Gazzetta points out that Osimhen is poised to sit down with club bosses and the Napoli hierarchy at the end of the season to discuss his future and the possibility of a transfer.

Winning the Scudetto could be pivotal for all parties involved. Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis wants to build on the success his team has made this campaign and keeping Osimhen would go a long way in achieving this objective.

Keeping Osimhen for an extra year would be a welcome development for De Laurentiis as opposed to selling the player.

Napoli bosses are keen to keep Luciano Spalletti happy. In a short period of time, Spalletti has transformed not only Napoli’s fortunes but has also moulded Osimhen to become one of the world’s deadliest finishers.

For the Serie A table leaders to regain their status as one of Europe’s elite again, Osimhen is a necessary component.

One way to keep Osimhen according to Gazzetta is to revise the player’s current pay package. Osimhen’s contract expires in 2025.

Given Serie A Salary capping considerations, the Nigerian would be rewarded in the way of “heavier bonuses” for his services. These bonuses could reach an additional one million euros in compensation.

Napoli are aware of Osimhen’s dream to play in the Premier League and there is an acceptance that he will one day make the jump to England’s top flight.

However, in the meantime, Napoli will make a financial effort to retain the striker. Osimhen is open to the idea and he is aware that staying in Naples for one more year would be good for everyone.

Needless to say that for United and manager Erik ten Hag, this would be a big transfer blow.

More details emerge about Qatar bid for United, much lower than thought

There is confusion over the exact figure of Sheikh Jassim bin Hamad Al Thani’s bid for Manchester United.

Yesterday The Peoples Person covered a multitude of reports which relayed that both Sheikh Jassim and his main competitor in the race to buy Manchester United, Sir Jim Ratcliffe, had submitted their third and final bids for the club.

It was indicated that Sheikh Jassim’s debt-free bid was around £5bn ($6.3bn). His offer also was said to contain a sweetener – the promise to inject significant funds into revamping Old Trafford and the club’s Carrington training complex.

The value of Sir Jim’s third proposal was not disclosed.

Today, it was relayed that whilst a lower total amount than Sheikh Jassim’s, Sir Jim’s offer actually values the club higher than the Qatari’s and the British businessman is in fact leading the race to take over the reins at Old Trafford.

According to the reliable Ben Jacobs, there are confusing reports from Raine Group, the merchant bank acting on behalf of the Glazers and representatives of Sheikh Jassim over the exact value of his third bid for the Red Devils.

Jacobs says, “Insiders claim Nine Two Foundation’s total offer is circa £5bn ($6.3bn), but number includes the debt & around £0.8bn ($1bn) in pledged investment. Latter not on top.”

“This means Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s bid, for control of the club, is significantly higher, with some sources indicating it has been all along. As discussed earlier, confusion and conflict over Sheikh Jassim structure.”

Jacobs adds, “Those close to Nine Two Foundation simply indicate their offer (which they still say is slightly above £5bn) is competitive and that it’s normal for any group seeking a ‘smaller’ investment to pay more than someone offering 100%.”

“But this is all very significant. Although Qatar’s total may appear competitive (especially compared to enterprise value of the club), and pledged Manchester United investment is vital. But offering latter within this process is seen as irrelevant and essentially ‘boosting’ the bid number.”

Jacobs compares the ongoing United takeover to Chelsea’s sale last year. During the Chelsea sale, the amount of investment to be put into the club was important as Roman Abramovic was keen to ensure that the next custodian had enough funds and good intentions to sustainably run Chelsea and ensure its sustained success on the pitch.

For United, this is not the case with the Glazers. The Glazers are only interested in the club’s valuation, based on 100% of the shares. The Glazer family hold 69%.

Jacobs further points out, “Based on this, Nine Two Foundation’s offer (the part the Glazers will look at) is said by some sources to be closer to £4bn ($5bn) because pledged investment is inclusive not in addition.”

“This would mean the offer would not be a world-record one for a sports club, although again Qatar side adamant their number is much bigger.”

As per Jacobs, the Glazers are prepared to lower their initial asking price as they prefer a full sale of United.

“It is now understood the Glazers may strongly consider an outright sale for between £4.8bn ($6bn) and £5.6bn ($7bn), which is a bit lower than the often quoted £6bn ($7.5bn).”

“The Glazers still remain determined sellers for the right price, but it is indicated that the Nine Two Foundation would effectively have to add an amount similar to their pledged investment (£0.8bn/$1bn) to the club valuation part of their offer to stand a realistic chance.”

Sir Jim’s offer is believed to be in the lower-to-middle range of what Raine and the Glazers could accept. Jacobs insists that for Sheikh Jassim’s Nine Two Foundation to own United, they will ultimately have to increase their offer if they are afforded the opportunity.

If they do not do so, they will be eliminated from the process.

In this case, the Glazers will either proceed with Sir Jim as the preferred buyer or explore alternative strategic options such as minority investments from the likes of Elliott Management, Ares Management and Carlyle.

Nothing definitive is expected this weekend as the Glazers have their full attention on the NFL draft.

Massive twist in United takeover as new favourite buyer emerges - report

Sir Jim Ratcliffe is reportedly in pole position to buy Manchester United.

According to Mike Keegan (The Daily Mail), the British billionaire’s valuation of United is higher than that of Sheikh Jassim Bin Hamad Al Thani.

It seems that Sir Jim has taken the lead in the race to buy United.

He wants to buy 69% of Man United or slightly more than 50%.

This would allow brothers Joe and Avram to remain at the club in some power.

They have reportedly received investment offers for a minority stake from multiple American firms.

The current owners could invest the money into redeveloping Old Trafford.

The report states:

“On Friday, those close to Sheikh Jassim bin Hamad al-Thani said his offer had broken the £5bn barrier with a pledge of substantial additional funding.”

“However, those with knowledge of the process, which is being run by US merchant bank Raine Group, say that is not the case and that the Ineos offer actually values the club higher.”

The final bids from both parties were submitted before Friday’s 10 pm deadline.

The Glazers are expected to make a decision in the next seven to ten days.

United join the race for €60m CL-winning defender coveted by PL top guns - report

Manchester United’s defence is currently plagued by injuries and loss of form and manager Erik ten Hag has had to contend with it by reshuffling his pack.

Both first-choice centre-backs Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez are out injured and that has forced the Dutch boss to play left-back Luke Shaw at the heart of defence.

New signing Tyrell Malacia has struggled in recent games, with his mistake against Sevilla and Tottenham allowing the opposition to score.

United have been forced into a defensive reshuffling

That is why the United manager has played right-back Diogo Dalot out on the left flank and surprisingly this could indicate that Ten Hag could be open to strengthening in that area.

If Aaron Wan-Bissaka ends up moving on in the summer, Dalot will expectedly go back to his preferred right-back spot and a backup left-back could be brought in.

According to Fichajes, Real Madrid are open to offloading Ferland Mendy and a bunch of Premier League clubs, including United, are lining up to bid for him.

“Ferland Mendy is one of the players with whom Real Madrid would seek to make cash throughout the next summer transfer market.

“Several Premier League teams such as Chelsea, Arsenal, Manchester United, Newcastle or Manchester City, who would value offering close to 60 million euros to take over the services of the French footballer,” the report added.

Signed by Zinedine Zidane for €55million, Mendy has not shone as much as the Los Blancos would have liked, especially in an offensive capacity.

Mendy deal makes little sense for United

But his defensive abilities have never been questioned and he possess the ability to play short passes, helping relieve the pressure and beat the opposition press.

The French international is also versatile to boot, capable of playing as a centre-back and a left midfielder. However, it seems unlikely that the 20-time English league champions will decide to fork out such a sum for the defender.

Mendy’s injury record is also very poor, with the former Olympique Lyon star missing 20 games in two separate injury-enforced absences this season.

Arsenal and Newcastle seem to be in much greater need of left-back reinforcements and this could be a ploy from Madrid to provoke the duo into bidding for the 27-year-old.

United win seven goal thriller spearheaded by 16 year old wonderkid

Manchester United u18s headed north on Saturday morning to take on second-placed Sunderland.

An early pass over the top from Ethan Williams played through Sam Mather, who looked clean through on goal but a big recovering block denied the winger’s shot.

Just after the ten minute mark, great technique execution from Williams saw him hit the half volley flush, straight down the keeper’s throat. With the amount of power on the shot it would have been a sure goal if it went to either side.

Sunderland’s Josh Robertson had a big chance when the ball was laid off to him in the box before he skipped past Sonny Aljofree and blazed his shot over the bar from close range.

In the 26th minute, Shea Lacey turned brilliantly in the midfield to open space and run 40 yards towards Sunderland’s box before laying off to Ethan Wheatley, who evaded the first challenge but couldn’t get his shot off quick enough before the second.

It was five minutes later though when the scoring was opened by Sunderland’s Cuba Mitchell. The midfielder took control of the ball to charge into the box and smash past Elyh Harrison at the front post.

United pulled it back just ten minutes later through 15 year old Jayce Fitzgerald, who charged through into Sunderland’s box with the help of a few lucky bounces before calmly slotting past the Sunderland keeper.

A late chance just before the break came Sunderland’s way, a dangerous cross flashed across the goal was only stopped by some great defending from Habeeb Ogunneye, who took it off the foot of the Sunderland attacker waiting at the back post, doing extremely well not direct into his own goal in the process.

It went into the break deservedly at 1-1 after an even back and forth 45 minutes.

Just minutes into the second half, Lacey crossed to Aljofree, stopping down six yards out to head but the United defender somehow put it over the bar.

Seconds later, Lacey went for the finish himself and made no mistake. After Jaydan Kamason won the ball to Lacey, the 16 year old took the strike first tim,e smashing it into the bottom right corner.

It didn’t take long for United to add their third, Williams pipped into steal the ball from Sunderland’s right back and was taken down in the process to win a penalty for United. James Nolan stepped up and slotted down the middle in style.

Sunderland pulled one back in the 71st minute, a cut back from the right side found Jaydon Jones arriving late into the box to finish with his left boot into the bottom right corner.

Minutes later and the substitute Jones was making a big impact on the match as he was set up at the edge of the box again, but this time on his right foot. He curled it over the bar.

Wheatley restored the two goal advantage in the 82nd minute. Stealing the ball at the halfway line, he ran through on goal to round the keeper and slot into the open net.

The scoring wasn’t done there though, as Sunderland added a late consolation. A cross to the back post was won by Trey Ogunsuyi, whose header was pushed up by Harrison and then headed into the roof of the net by Aljofree, who couldn’t get over the ball to clear.

It was too little too late though and United ran out 3-4 winners. With only two matches remaining in the season United are locked in as third place finishers.

United: Harrison, Kamason, Ogunneye, Aljofree, Nolan, Williams, Fitzgerald, McAllister (Scanlon 62), Lacey (Berry 80), Wheatley (Musa 85), Mather (Missin 80)

Ten Hag has to beat Jose Mourinho in order to sign 25-goal superstar - report

Manchester United have struggled to put teams to the sword this season and the lack of ruthlessness have come back to bite them as seen in recent disappointing results against Sevilla and Tottenham Hotspur.

It is not that United have failed to create chances but their strikers are not traditional No 9s and they do not gamble inside the box.

Marcus Rashford, who is enjoying his best-ever season, has scored great goals and is more adept when playing on the left wing rather than as a target man up front.

Anthony Martial and Wout Weghorst have both failed to impress and manager Erik ten Hag must improve his options ahead of next season.

United need an out-and-out striker next season

Most reports tend to indicate that the two main contenders to arrive at Old Trafford is either Tottenham record scorer Harry Kane or Serie A top scorer Victor Osimhen of Napoli.

However due to the price involved for both and the difficulty associated with doing a deal with both clubs, United have kept a list of backup options ready.

One of those young players who is seen as the perfect alternative for the aforementioned duo is Goncalo Ramos of Benfica.

He became a household name during the World Cup with his exquisite hat-trick against Switzerland for Portugal and his club form has not been too shabby either.

The 21-year-old has 25 goals and 11 assists in 42 games across all competitions with a goal involvement every 86 minutes. Impressive stats considering his age.

The Portugal international has been linked with a move to the Reds in the past and Benfica are reluctant to let him leave for anything less than his release clause which stands at €120million.

Roma enter Ramos race

According to Portuguese publication A Bola, legendary Portuguese coach and former United manager Jose Mourinho is keeping tabs on the striker and is contemplating asking Roma to enter the race.

“Benfica striker Gonçalo Ramos, according to news published in Italy, is being analyzed by Roma, coached by José Mourinho, as a potential reinforcement for next season,” the report mentioned.

Ramos has a contract with the Portuguese giants till 2026 and it is doubtful whether Roma can afford to complete a deal of such magnitude.

It might be a ploy to force teams to pay through the roof for one of world football’s most coveted youngsters.

Outrageously talented 15-yo United academy gem trains with the first team

15-year-old Manchester United youth star Amir Ibragimov took part in Friday’s first-team training session.

According to The Manchester Evening News, the youngster shared the news on social media and the outlet itself confirmed his presence at Friday’s training.

Recently, The Peoples Person discussed Willy Kambwala’s presence in first-team training alongside the likes of Harry Maguire, Facundo Pellistri, Marcus Rashford and other United senior stars.

Ibragimov is just the latest player to be accorded such a privilege.

Ibragimov joined United when he was ten after the Red Devils snatched him from Sheffield United. Since then, he has made a name for himself within United’s academy, with coaches impressed by his steady progression and massive potential.

Ibragimov received a call-up for England’s U15s last year.

During his debut game for the Three Lions, the United youngster plundered a hat-trick in a 4-3 win for his national side.

Ibragimov predominantly plays in the forward positions. He has the potential to play both on the flank and to lead the attack.

The 15-year-old has made five appearances for United U18s this campaign.

That amongst all his peers it is he who Ten Hag chose to train with the senior players shows just how highly Ibragimov is rated within Old Trafford.

It is also a vindication of his maturity and will undoubtedly bode well for the player’s confidence going forward.

United have an extensive and illustrious history of incorporating youth into the first team and Ibragimov represents yet another instance of this practice by the 20-time English champions. Ibragimov is certainly one for United supporters to keep an eye on as his career unfolds.

United scout left 'amazed' by 23 yr old talent, could be the next Beckham - report

Manchester United threw away a comfortable two goal lead in their recent stalemate against Tottenham Hotspur, with yet another defensive collapse in the second half.

The Red Devils have little time to recuperate, with high flying Aston Villa due in Manchester tomorrow for a visit, and Brighton to come shortly thereafter.

United have performed admirably under new manager Erik ten Hag, and find themselves through to their second domestic cup final of the season, having already lifted the Carabao Cup in February.

There remains more work to be done though, before the 20-time-English-Champions can truly challenge their noisy neighbours for the title.

The club have meticulously scouted a multitude of players scattered across Europe, hoping to shore up reinforcements for every position on the pitch.

According to DIEZ, United were out on another headhunting trip in Greece recently, with a scout present for Aris Thessaloniki FC’s 2-1 victory over Olympiakos in the Super League.

The player being studied was Aris forward Luis Palma, who would score the winner on the night with a sensational strike directly from a corner.

The Honduran International has been in inspired form for the Kitrinomavroi, scoring 11 goals and racking up seven assists in his 33 appearances this season.

Despite being linked with Portuguese club Braga and Spanish club Levante, Palma made the surprising move of signing with the Greek club on a four and a half-year deal in January, 2022.

It has clearly worked in his favour, with the likes of Rangers, Anderlecht and RC Lens all vying for his signature, alongside United.

Palma has a contract at the Kleanthis Vikelidis Stadium until June 2026 and the Greek side will look to extract full value for their star prospect, aware that trying to hold on to him may prove to be an exercise in futility.

The Honduran remains an interesting proposition for the Red Devils.

Diez cites Greek outlet Transfer Geeks, who claim that the United scout “was amazed” by the Honduran’s goal and the club will continue to monitor his situation, with a view to a permanent transfer in the summer.

United currently have the likes of Rashford, Jadon Sancho and Antony as options on either side of their attack, with young guns like Alejandro Garnacho and Facundo Pellistri backing them up.

A case could be made for a loan move for Pellistri, who requires more game-time to truly discover his feet at the highest level, and in that case, a further argument could be made for the signing of Palma as a more experienced replacement for the Uruguayan.

Expect more updates on this front soon enough.

Ten Hag makes final decision regarding Zidane Iqbal's immediate future

The season run-in is finally here and Manchester United have the chance to cement their place in the top four of the Premier League and add to their trophy cabinet.

The Red Devils are currently fourth in the league standings following their disappointing draw against Tottenham Hotspur, two points behind third-placed Newcastle and six ahead of fifth-placed Spurs and Aston Villa, whom they face next.

Along with the race to secure Champions League qualification, the 20-time English league champions also have the FA Cup final to contend with and a chance to stop Manchester City from completing the infamous Treble.

Garnacho will not be released for U-20 WC

It is no surprise that manager Erik ten Hag has been so insistent on not releasing Alejandro Garnacho for the upcoming U-20 World Cup to be held in Argentina.

The academy graduate who recently signed a new contract and is nearing a return to first team action has become one of the most important attacking weapons in the Dutchman’s arsenal.

Recent disappointments where the side have blown their two-goal advantage (Sevilla, Spurs) have been mainly down to the manager’s weak substitutions.

It is not an attack on the former Ajax coach as the likes of Wout Weghorst, Fred, Anthony Martial and Anthony Elanga are not as fearless as the Argentine and hence the manager wants to keep him for the season finale.

It is not only Garnacho who has been named as part of the U-20 World Cup squad. Iraq have called up another United academy star — Zidane Iqbal for the tournament.

It was thought that the 20-year-old would be utilised by Ten Hag over the course of the season after he impressed during pre-season and was denied a loan exit in January.

Unfortunately, Ten Hag has not given Iqbal a single minute of action so far this season but has named him in the matchday squad for a total of 17 times.

According to Iraqi journalist Ali Nouri, the Dutch manager will not allow Iqbal to take part, despite his lack of minutes for United and his wish to participate in the competition.

Zidane Iqbal has met with same response

“The Iraqi Football Association is still awaiting Manchester United’s response to allow Zidane Iqbal to be with the youth team at the World Cup finals in Argentina next month.

“Coach Ten Hag refused the player’s presence in the World Cup, despite the player’s desire to participate in the tournament,” the journalist tweeted.

This could be a sign that the manager does not want to lose squad options at this crucial stage of the Premier League and is waiting for the team to secure a top-four finish.

Once secured, Ten Hag might even hand the Iraq international some much-needed game time so that his main players do not sustain any injury ahead of the FA Cup final.

Serie A giants ready to slash €30m off world class striker’s asking price - report

Juventus have reportedly reduced their asking price for striker Dusan Vlahovic.

The Serbian was originally valued north of €100m.

But according to AS, the Serie A giants have slashed €30 million off his fee and are now demanding in the range of €60m-€70m.

Juventus’ summer plans will depend mainly on whether they can secure Champions League football.

In case they miss out, the Turin giants will plan the sale of two stars – Vlahovic and Rabiot.

Vlahovic has not had the best season, but a player of his quality won’t be quiet for long.

United are in dire need of a striker.

Erik ten Hag has identified the number nine position as one that needs strengthening in the summer.

With Anthony Martial struggling to stay fit, United need a reliable goalscorer in their team.

The Red Devils have been linked to world-class names like Harry Kane and Victor Osimhen, who would both cost north of €100m.

At the given price, Vlahovic could be a far better deal.

The Serbian is one of the most deadly finishers across Europe and would benefit United enormously.

Creative wingers like Jadon Sancho and Antony would thrive with a centre forward ready to put the ball in the back of the net.

More great news for Ten Hag as key star returns to first team training

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has confirmed that Alejandro Garnacho has returned to team training ahead of the Red Devils’ clash against Aston Villa on Sunday.

Garnacho last played a game for United in March when he had to be taken off after sustaining an injury during United’s goalless draw against Southampton at Old Trafford.

In that time, Garnacho has missed 10 games for the Red Devils.

The Peoples Person recently covered a report which detailed that the Argentine is set to have a place on the bench when United host Aston Villa at Old Trafford.

Ten Hag was asked about Garnacho’s fitness and the player’s imminent return to competitive action.

The United boss told reporters, “Yes [he is closer to being back].”

“He will return tomorrow [Friday] in the team training part and then we have to see when he can return totally in the team training and then back into games.”

In other good news, United have confirmed that Garnacho has signed a new contract, keeping him at Old Trafford until 2028.

The Red Devils have been locked in negotiations with Garnacho and his camp for a number of months and now a breakthrough has been reached.

It was extremely important for United to tie down the highly-talented youngster who is rapidly growing in stature within the first team.

Alongside Garnacho, Harry Maguire is also likely to be back for Sunday’s clash. The United skipper was absent from Thursday’s squad that travelled to London to play Tottenham Hotspur after picking up a small injury.

Tom Heaton and Scott McTominay are still in recovery and will not be available for selection.

As United face Aston Villa, there is no room for mistakes, especially after the draw against Tottenham Hotspur on Thursday.

Unai Emery’s men are on an upward trajectory and they themselves are targetting European football next season.

This French wonderkid could be the answer to United’s defensive woes - Opinion

Prognosis, diagnosis, ice baths and cryotherapy, multiple journeys under the knife and a whole lot of loneliness and despair.

At just 18 years of age, Willy Kambwala has endured the sufferings of a seasoned veteran, but the youngster has not let them get the best of him, not yet.

Signed for a hefty €4M fee on deadline day in 2020, the then French U-16’s captain had the world at his feet when he made his much anticipated move to the Theatre of Dreams.

It was a dream that would quickly unfold into a recurring series of never-ending nightmares.

Born in Kinshasa, the capital city of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Kambwala’s family relocated to France when he was just five years old.

His journey in the world of football would start at Sochaux in 2018.

Les Lionceaux are well known for producing a string of excellent academy products over the years, with the likes of Marcus Thuram and Maxcence Lacroix currently strutting their stuff in the Bundesliga for Borussia Monchengladbach and Wolfsburg respectively.

Kambwala’s rise through the Sochaux ranks was meteoric, and soon he would be captaining his country at the U-16 level.

Meanwhile, dossiers were being compiled at various top sides scattered across Europe detailing Kambwala’s brilliance, and it seemed inevitable that he would not be at Stade Auguste Bonal for very long.

Former British PM Boris Johnson would play a role in hastening that journey.

With the onset of new Brexit laws and regulations which would prohibit British clubs from ever truly targeting U-18 talents in Europe, Manchester United found themselves compelled to embark on a continental signing spree in the summer of 2020.

In came Marc Jurado from Barcelona, Alejandro Garnacho from Atlético Madrid, Isak Hansen-Aarøen from Tromso, Robert Vitek from Sigma Olomouc and Alvaro Fernandez from Real Madrid, but the Red Devils would have to wait until deadline day to pull off the best signing of the lot.

Despite serious interest from bitter rivals Liverpool, United won the race for Kambwala’s signature, but misfortune struck early.

Barely weeks into life in Manchester, Kambwala suffered a severe ankle injury in a nothing game against Salford’s first team, ruling him out for eleven months.

He would make his long-awaited return to action in an 8-2 thrashing of Birmingham City’s Under-18s in the Premier League Cup in October of 2021, but fate was not done inflicting its cruel blows upon the youngster.

Kambwala continued to suffer niggling injuries through the last term, only making a handful of appearances across the 21/22 campaign, but his luck seems to finally be changing.

The youngster has been able to string together a steady run of games, and looks like he is back to his very best.

As The Peoples Person reported earlier, in the wake of injuries to first choice centre back pairing Lisandro Martinez and Raphael Varane, Kambwala has also been promoted to the first team setup.

The Red Devils have suffered several lapses in defence in recent weeks, against the likes of Sevilla and Tottenham Hotspur, and the elegant Frenchman may be the answer to United’s defensive woes.

Standing at a towering 6’4, Kambwala is a physical specimen who dominates contests in the ground and air with equal ease.

He is no slouch with a burst of pace and raw acceleration which allows him to keep up with the paciest of attackers.

Comfortable on either side of defence, Kambwala possesses a superb range of passing, and despite his massive frame, can turn like a ballerina.

If things continue to devolve in defence, Erik ten Hag may find himself forced to give the teenager minutes at the highest level.

Many will argue that he may not yet be ready, but the kids did win something in 94′ despite Alan Hansen’s many inhibitions about their abilities, and perhaps this kid will too.

As the old adage goes, ‘If you’re good enough, you’re old enough’, a sentiment which echoes throughout United’s storied history.

Step up, Willy Kambwala, the time is nigh.

4-2-3-1: Angry Ten Hag to drop two lazy players for this electric line-up

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag was furious with his Manchester United side after they threw away a two-goal lead for the second time this month against Spurs yesterday.

After the game the manager said “Some thought 90% was enough … We didn’t block the crosses or the shot, we didn’t squeeze out. It was so easy for them to score … You could see the goal coming, I had the subs ready but it was too late.”

It is likely that the substitutions he is referring to are the replacement of Antony and Aaron Wan-Bissaka with Tyrell Malacia and Wout Weghorst, rather than the first change – Fred and Anthony Martial for Jadon Sancho and Christian Eriksen.

Wan-Bissaka has been a revelation recently but was up to his old tricks yesterday, clearly mentally switching off and allowing acres of space down the right flank.

Both he and Antony were making little or no effort to track back in the second half and were both ineffective going forward as well.

If those two were the main targets of the boss’s fury, they could be dropped for Sunday’s home game against Aston Villa.

With a defensive injury crisis, there are few alternatives to Wan-Bissaka. Harry Maguire’s injury status is unclear, but he, too, has been error prone. Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez are both out, so Luke Shaw has been partnering Victor Lindelof at centre back to good effect.

Shaw’s natural replacement at left back, Tyrell Malacia, has also made some mistakes and again last night allowed Harry Kane to break free to tee up Son for Spurs’ equaliser.

The only other available experienced defender is Brandon Williams, but this seems like a stretch as he hasn’t played a competitive game all season.

It could therefore be a case of deciding which is the lesser of two evils – Wan-Bissaka or Malacia – and we think the Dutchman could just nick it, with Dalot returning to right back.

In midfield, Casemiro and Christian Eriksen were not at their best yesterday but are still expected to start.

Jadon Sancho was the first to be substituted yesterday despite opening the scoring with an excellent goal. However, again referring to Ten hag’s post-match comments, it could be Antony that is rotated out on Sunday as he put in a lazy performance.

Anthony Martial was also ineffective as a second half substitute and Fred was poor when he came on.

If Scott McTominay remains injured, Marcel Sabitzer could therefore be given another chance to shine. He could play in the number 10 position, with Bruno Fernandes pushing out to the right wing.

Marcus Rashford impressed at centre forward and so is likely to keep that role.

With all that in mind, here is our predicted XI for Sunday’s game:

United handed boost in race for huge PL star as rivals fall at first hurdle

Liverpool continue to lead the race for a summer move for Manchester United target Mason Mount, but a move could collapse if they miss out on European competition.

Mount’s contract will expire in June 2024, with his current club expected to sell him rather than allowing him to go on a free transfer next summer.

The Peoples Person recently reported that United were interested in a summer move for Mount as his future at the London club hangs in the balance.

The former Derby County and Vitesse midfielder has been a gem for Chelsea, especially under Thomas Tuchel. He has already won the Champions League starting in the 2021 final when the Blues beat Manchester City.

Wherever he moves to next, it will no doubt be a sensational move with a quality player clearly there.

Arsenal and Newcastle are also said to be showing an interest in the midfielder but talks are not advanced yet.

According to Football Insider, Mount’s priority is to compete for trophies and play regularly. So while Liverpool lead the race, it is said that European Qualification could play a huge role in the 24-year-old’s decision.

Liverpool are currently sitting in 7th place in the Premier League and look likely to miss out on Champions League football for the next season. There is still a chance they could fail to qualify for any European competition next season with Chelsea also falling short.

Mount has been a key player for his side in recent seasons and has had a reasonable season despite his club’s bad form. He has scored three goals and provided six assists in all competitions during this campaign, but has found himself out of the starting eleven lately.

This could be because he has failed to commit his future to the club. However, he has also struggled for fitness this season due to a couple of injuries along the way.

Liverpool’s interest comes as a result of Jurgen Klopp wanting to revamp his midfield following a poor season.

Jude Bellingham, who is also a Man United target, has reportedly rejected a move to Merseyside so far.

Erik ten Hag will no doubt have a busy summer ahead with plenty of other midfielder options included in the shortlist as well and he could find himself competing with Klopp over a number of names.

United vs City for 20yo versatile PL defender with "fantastic future" - report

It has been a long season for Manchester United with progress deep into all three knockout tournaments coupled with the intense top-four race in the Premier League.

Along the way, manager Erik ten Hag has had to deal with tons of injuries and loss of form for certain players and has been forced to tweak his system many-a-times.

The Dutch manager seems to like his players to be versatile and that has proved particularly effective in defence as certain full-backs and defenders have been forced to swap sides.

United need a versatile defender in the summer

Diogo Dalot is excelling recently as a left-back while Tyrell Malacia has played on the right hand side of defence. Even in central defence, Victor Lindelof has played both as a right centre-back and the left.

In case rumours regarding Aaron Wan-Bissaka‘s departure ahead of next season come to pass, the Dutch boss will be eager to bring in a versatile presence in defence.

The rumour mill seems to suggest former protégé Jurrien Timber could be the ideal addition in that case but a surprising name has entered the fray.

According to Football Insider, Brentford’s versatile full-back Aaron Hickey is being monitored by both Manchester clubs with a view of buying him in the summer.

“Man City have sent scouts to watch Brentford star Aaron Hickey this season. Manchester rivals Man United have also been scouting Hickey and both clubs are interested in signing the defender this summer,” the report stated.

It is easy to see why the 20-year-old is so highly-rated. The Scot has already played in three different leagues — Scottish Premier League, Serie A and now the Premier League and has excelled everywhere.

The Scottish international can play both on the right and left of the defence and has also doubled up as a right midfielder or left midfielder on occasion.

Hickey’s versatility & impact for his age is impressive

That is not all as he can also play in the heart of defence and as the defensive pivot in midfield. That is exactly why the Bees forked out an initial £14million that could rise to £18m with add-ons for the highly-rated youngster from Bologna.

Hickey has made 21 appearances in the Premier League this season with 18 of them coming from the start. He has mainly operated on the right side of defence for Thomas Frank’s team.

He has been capped nine times for his national team by Steve Clarke and has managed to usurp both Liverpool’s Andy Robertson and Arsenal’s Kieran Tierney in those games.

In past interviews, Frank has suggested that the versatile star has a “fantastic future” ahead of him and he could definitely play for the big guns in the future. That prediction could well ring true next season.

United in the mix for £50million rated PL midfield gem - report

Manchester United are through to their second knockout tournament final of the current campaign, after emerging victorious against Brighton during their FA Cup semifinal clash over the weekend.

The Red Devils now face a broken Tottenham Hotspur side later tonight, fresh from a 6-1 humiliating loss to Newcastle United, in a bid to consolidate their position in the race for top four.

With the Glazers finally on the verge of completing the sale of the club, times are looking bright for the red half of Manchester.

Following the takeover, United will be on the lookout for major reinforcements in the summer, and a number of names have been linked with the club in recent months.

One name that keeps popping up is Fulham’s Joao Palhinha.

The 27-year-old defensive midfielder joined the Cottagers for a reported £20million fee from Portuguese outfit Sporting CP last summer, putting pen to paper on a five-year deal.

He has flourished ever since for Marco Silva’s side, racking up 34 appearances across all competitions and scoring four goals.

‘Queque’ has made more tackles (119) than any other Premier League player this term, and his impressive performances have made a lot of top sides sit up and take notice.

According to a new report by Football Insider, Palhinha’s stint in South London could soon be drawing to a close, with Fulham set to consider bids in excess of £50million for their midfield destroyer this summer.

United are among a whole host of clubs, including Chelsea, Liverpool and Tottenham, who have been keeping a close eye on Palhinha and are known admirers of his style of play.

The Portuguese international remains one of Fulham’s highest earners, drawing a reported wage of around £50,000-a-week at Craven Cottage.

It will hardly prove to be a stumbling block for interested suitors and Palhinha is likely to have his wages doubled, even tripled, if the right move materialises.

United require a back-up option for Casemiro and Palhinha could certainly do a job for the Red Devils in said role.

The Brazilian international remains United’s only true option in defensive midfield, and his absence from proceedings this term have often coincided with chaotic spells of form.

Palhinha would be the ideal candidate to step in for the three-time Champions League winners whenever required, giving United the kind of squad depth they require to truly kick-start the Erik ten Hag revolution at Old Trafford.

Fabrizio Romano says United are close to agreeing deal for dazzling starlet

Manchester United are closing in on a new contract for Alejandro Garnacho.

The Red Devils have been locked in negotiations over a new deal for the Argentine and according to the reliable Fabrizio Romano, only a few minor details are left before an agreement is reached.

Garnacho’s current terms expire in 2024, although there is a willingness on both sides to extend the player’s stay at Old Trafford.

Back in February, The Peoples Person covered a report which relayed that image rights are the only thing holding up a deal from being fully signed and announced.

Garnacho’s new contract is expected to stretch until 2028.

The new pay package is expected to reflect the 18-year-old’s growing status within the team and in Erik ten Hag’s plans.

Romano has now provided an update on the progress of the ongoing talks between the club and the player’s camp.

Romano indicates, “United want to sort out contracts of players such as David de Gea and Marcus Rashford, but they have also not forgotten about Alejandro Garnacho.”

“There is an option to extend his contract by a further year until 2025, this is 100% confirmed.”

“They remain in advanced negotiations over extending this contract even further, there are still one or two things to fix, but he’s very happy there and they are very happy with him.”

“So this is something United want to get done, for sure.”

That United are progressing well in talks for Garnacho’s new deal is good news for United fans, who also learned yesterday that the forward is inching closer to a return to action after six weeks on the sidelines with an injury.

PL rivals intensify interest in United star who has made it clear he wants an exit

Newcastle are stepping up their interest in Manchester United midfielder Scott McTominay.

McTominay has been linked to Newcastle on multiple occasions in the past, and now the Toon are set to push hard when the summer transfer window opens.

Erik ten Hag has shown a clear preference for a midfield trio of Casemiro, Christian Eriksen and Bruno Fernandes, which has meant that McTominay’s game time has been significantly limited.

The loan signing of Marcel Sabitzer also did not help McTominay’s cause.

According to Football Insider, McTominay conveyed his wish to leave to the United board if he falls further down the pecking order – a situation that is likely to arise with the Red Devils also in the market for a new midfielder.

Football Insider reports, “Newcastle United are pushing ahead with their pursuit of Scott McTominay, sources have told Football Insider. McTominay is set to leave Man United in the summer and is attracting interest from multiple Premier League clubs.”

“The 26-year-old will have two years left on his contract at Old Trafford at the end of the season but Newcastle are keen to agree a deal for the midfielder this summer.”

“Eddie Howe is looking for a midfielder to join Joelinton and Burno Guimaraes to create a long-term trio in the middle of the park and add some creativity to his squad.”

Alongside McTominay, the Magpies are also targeting Mason Mount, Harvey Barnes and James Ward-Prowse as reinforcements.

In addition to significant investment from their Saudi owners, Newcastle will also likely be boosted by funds drawn from their imminent Champions League qualification.

Eddie Howe’s side are currently in third position, level on points with United. although they have played a game more.

With United needing to sell this summer so as to buy, McTominay is someone who could potentially earn the club substantial money in the way of transfer fees.

Video: Sensational United loanee produces world-class assist for loan side

Manchester United loanee Charlie McNeill came off the bench to play the final minutes for Newport County as his team were beaten by three goals to two by Harrogate Town.

Goals from Sam Folarin, George Thomson and Luke Armstrong were enough to help Harrogate down Newport.

McNeill, who joined the League Two club in January in search of first-team minutes, had to be content with a place on the bench.

With his side trailing, Graham Coughlan brought on McNeill and the United loanee had an instant impact.

He produced a brilliant chip to set Omar Bogle through on goal. The forward made no mistake from close range as he put the ball into the back of the net.

The result left Newport 14th in League Two standings, just a point above Gillingham and four points adrift of Sutton United.

During the 12 minutes McNeill was on the pitch, he blocked one shot.

The 19-year-old embarked on one dribble, which he completed successfully.

He registered just six touches of the ball during his brief cameo from the bench. The striker successfully delivered all four passes he attempted.

McNeill made one key pass and created as many big chances.

He delved into one ground duel, which he won.

(Stats obtained from Sofascore)

It was an impressive display considering the limited time he was on the pitch and that should put the youngster in contention to start when Newport clash against Gillingham on Saturday.

The United academy star will certainly be buoyed by his contributions against Harrogate.

Newport have the opportunity to create a four-point gap between themselves and The Gills when they meet this weekend.

FA confirms first change in cup final details for over a decade

Manchester United set up a mouthwatering FA Cup final against local rivals, Manchester City, after beating Brighton on penalties on Sunday.

Talks have since taken place on the kick off time for the final, with both sets of fans due to descend on the capital, from Manchester.

As reported by The Daily Mail, the Football Association has confirmed the showpiece occasion will kick off at the earlier time of 3pm GMT, on Saturday, 3rd June.

It will be the first time since 2011 that the final has kicked off at this time, having started at 5:30 GMT for the last decade.

The last 3pm kick off interestingly included Manchester City, who defeated Stoke after knocking United out in the semis that particular year.

City have held a monopoly on domestic competitions since then and United will be eager to get one over on their noisy neighbours this time around.

The blue half of Manchester are looking set to scoop a Treble this season, something that has only ever been achieved once before, in the history of English football – by United.

Erik ten Hag and United fans will be desperate to stop City from repeating United’s incredible achievement from 1999 and in doing so, add to their own hunt for trophies, this season.

The move in kick-off time will be welcomed by travelling fans who would have faced a rush to get back to train stations for the last trains back to Manchester.

The Metropolitan Police also raised concerns about at later kick-off time and will be pleased to have come to the agreement to move back to the traditional 3pm start.

City will go into the final as favourites but expect Erik ten Hag to have something up his sleeve, just as he did when City visited Old Trafford in January.

United caught City cold on the day, winning by two goals to one and a repeat of that score line would be more than welcome at Wembley.

Harry Maguire is a headache for Ten Hag due to this huge flaw - The Athletic

As Manchester United beat Brighton at Wembley on penalties to book their place in the FA Cup final against Manchester City, a notable absence beyond those ruled out by injuries was Harry Maguire.

Maguire missed the game as he was serving a suspension which was levelled at him after picking up yellow cards in the fifth round of the competition against West Ham and in the quarter-final clash against Fulham.

The United skipper was also not available for the first-leg Carabao Cup clash vs. Nottingham Forest, as he was suspended due to collecting bookings in the third and fifth rounds respectively.

As The Athletic’s Carl Anka points out, Maguire has been booked nine times in just 27 appearances in all competitions for United this season.

To put that into context, he goes into the referee’s book once every three games.

The Athletic performed a deep-dive on all the bookings Maguire has received this season and there were six glaring circumstances that dictated the manner in which the Englishman picks up yellow cards.

As per Anka, some of the defender’s bookings come as a result of unfortunate or avoidable situations. A case in point is when he came on as a substitute in the Europa League against Sheriff Tiraspol and was booked after being judged to have made a foul when leaping to contest a header.

Anka notes that Maguire also gets booked for dissent. The Athletic point out instances in which the 30-year-old has lashed out at referees after blatant fouls, only for his name to be taken – not for the foul itself but for his passionate protestations.

Thirdly, Maguire’s bookings can be attributed to him engaging in unnecessary physical tussles brought about by his own poor judgement. In the FA Cup quarter-final against Fulham, he was shown yellow for roughhousing Aleksandar Mitrovic who was attempting to turn with the ball.

A similar incident took place in the Red Devils’ 2-0 win against Nottingham Forest at the City Ground, where Maguire got into a duel with Taiwo Awoniyi. He wrestled with the Forest man before dropping him to the floor. A yellow card was brandished less than three minutes into the game.

Fourthly, Maguire’s yellow cards come due to what Anka terms as “bailout bookings” As per Anka, “These are bookings where Maguire makes a foul to “bail out” bad decisions made by himself, or United team-mates.”

These have come in the way of Maguire fouling a rival player to overcompensate for a bad pass, poor positioning or any other error that threatens David de Gea‘s goal.

The England international also gets booked a lot for cynical fouls designed to stop counter-attacks. It’s a well-known fact that the former Leicester City man is extremely fearful of pace and being caught out in transition with plenty of space to defend.

He resorts to cynical fouling as a solution to this perennial disadvantage.

Finally, Maguire’s bookings come as a result of the player choosing one kind of embarrassment over another. For instance against Arsenal at Old Trafford, Gabriel Jesus went past him with a brilliant piece of skill but rather than let himself be the subject of such humiliation, Maguire elected to bring down the Brazilian.

The Athletic adds in their analysis of the United captain, “Most of these yellow cards come from Maguire fouling an opposition player close to the halfway line, after realising he is about to be beaten by a faster/stronger attacking player.”

“These situations keep arising because Erik ten Hag ideally wants United to play with a higher defensive line, with sustained pressure from his forward line. However, their attempts to squeeze the space the opposition can play in can often go awry, leaving United’s defence vulnerable to counter-attacks when they lose the ball.”

“As such, Maguire – who is already uncomfortable playing in a higher line – often takes it upon himself to commit tactical fouls on opposition players and stop counter-attacks before they become too dangerous.”

Some of the Premier League’s best defenders including Rodri, Fabinho, Ruben Dias and Thiago Silva excel at tactical fouling but Maguire lacks the pace, timing and match-reading ability to make them without getting booked.

Maguire’s situation is not helped by the fact that he is so short in confidence, with his United career reportedly hanging in the balance. There are rumours that he is on his way out of Old Trafford.

The Athletic further says, “He has become a casualty of United’s growth this season in a way the club’s other centre backs have not. Martinez marries his faster running with excellent match-reading ability, meaning he often comes away with the ball in duels that Maguire typically loses. Victor Lindelof and Raphael Varane are likelier to jockey an attacker away from goal before making well-timed tackles in less dangerous areas.”

Going forward, whether it’s for the season run-in or ahead of the next campaign, this is a problem that Ten Hag and certainly Maguire need to address.
