Reports in Germany via Kicker are suggesting that Mesut Ozil, who is seemingly being linked with pretty much every top club all of a sudden, is now coveted by his former club Schalke.
Ozil’s apparent new contract offer remains unsigned with the expectation that the German will indeed leave on a free next summer, with the Independent recently praising his performance against Spurs at the weekend but also that he is almost certainly going to leave, with Manchester United favourites to snap him up.
Schalke would certainly be an unlikely destination at this particular point in the 29-year old’s career, with this likely to be the last big contract offered in his career, it’s expected he’ll go where the money and potential for trophies is, and the opportunity to link up with former boss Jose Mourinho could be that move.
However, the Bundesliga club is in Gelsenkirchen the city of Ozil’s birth, and the World Cup winner did start his senior career with Schalke so it may not be inconceivable that he does return ‘home’ to cement his legacy and help the club up the table to challenge Bayern’s dominance.
